Musing Mondays

Musing Mondays is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Jenn at A Daily Rhythm. Each week, there are a few prompts and you can pick which one to talk about!
  • I’m currently reading…
  • Up next I think I’ll read…
  • I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
  • I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
  • I can’t wait to get a copy of…
  • I wish I could read ___, but…
  • I blogged about ____ this past week…

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What would you do if you wanted to buy a book for someone, but didn’t know what they like to read? Would you ask them? Would you choose something you, yourself, like? How would you go about buying them something?

So right now, I'm reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown.

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi books but this one is done pretty well. It's a good mix of space adventure type stuff and fantasy and it works for me so far. The characters are diverse and interesting and the manin character, Darrow (love the name) is kind of a jackass so he isn't perfect. I will warn you though, this book is remarkably similar to Red Queen in some ways. They are almost two different side of the same coin but each one is unique and completely worth the read.

As for the random question...It definitely depends on the person. If it was a family member, it would be easy enough to search through their bookshelves and pick something that they like. But if it were for someone I wasn't close to, I would probably go with a book that I really enjoyed but isn't a niche book. I wouldn't pick high fantasy or sci-fi but something a little bit more down the middle of the road. Another option is a really nice copy of a classic book that they probably read in high school. It's nice to have hard covers of old favorites.

What do y'all think? What would you do?

Hope everybody has an awesome week!

  2. Sometimes I'll go with a nice coffee-table type book about one of the person's particular interests--but I usually only go that route for a person particularly close to me-those big beautiful books are expensive!

    1. Coffee table books are a great way to go. That's always a good choice. You're right though, they are so expensive! There's one I have had my eye on for a long time but the price drives me off. Thanks for commenting!

  3. I love that cover! I haven't read Red Queen -- you must have I guess? AM curious to read your review after this given their similarities. Hard covers or special editions of old favourites is a good idea for a gift! Here's my Musing: http://editingeverything.com/blog/2015/05/04/monday-musings-11-how-to-buy-a-book/

    1. Red Queen was pretty awesome. (link to my review http://tarabelletalking.blogspot.com/2015/02/book-review-red-queen-by-victoria.html ) It was a great read and had strong female characters that stood up for themselves which was refreshing in many ways.

  4. I don't know what I'd do. Well, actually. If I didn't know the person well enough to buy them a book I don't think I'd get one for them. That's probably silly but I wouldn't want to get them something wouldn't like. Maybe just a bookstore voucher to be safe instead...? :)

    1. That's a good idea. Gift Cards and vouchers are always a good way to go, especially with the way book stores are now. They can also get a movie or magazines or something :-D

      Thanks for stopping by dear!

  5. I kinda like the sound of this one. I'll have to add it to my TBR list. As for buying a book for a friend I would hope I either have them on
facebook or visit their blog. That way I could use one of the two sites to cheat and figure out their likes.

    1. It's definitely a good one. It has a very cocky but compelling main character and I usually don't connect as well with male characters but this one pulled me in! You should check it out :-D

I love the idea of social media stalking for ideas haha That's awesome.
